Officer's family shattered by shooting (http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8428700)

A police officer and father of six shot dead in northern NSW was a brave, tremendous bloke who spent more than half his life protecting the community.

Senior Constable David Rixon, 40, was on duty and alone when he and another man were shot during a gunfight outside a block of units in Lorraine Street, West Tamworth, about 8am (AEDT) on Friday.

RIP Senior Constable RIXON. Too sad.

Wow, RIP. I'll keep his family and fellow-LEOs in my thoughts in prayers.

Aussie George, from things you may have seen in the media and reports/stats you may have read of LEO deaths in the U.S., how would you say it compares with the rates of LEO on-the-job deaths in Oz? Is the rate increasing there as well?

I am not sure if it is going up. Deaths here are pretty rare compared to what I have seen since being on RP. Partly I guess due to our population. There are only 30 million Aussies, and therefore less dirt bags.

We also have a lot less guns here and therefore a lot less gun related crime.

In 11 years I have only had a bad guy pull a gun on me once, and that is fairly rare here. I have also only been to handful of gun related jobs in that time, and I mainly worked in rural areas, although I have worked in a two cities, and one of those has a bad reputation.

Having said that, last year my dept lost a Detective when he was first on scene at an armed hold up. He was shot in the face and died at the scene. The bad guys were arrested later.

This latest shooting was in the state to my south and as the news article and video show, it was one of those things, although I suspect the officer knew the driver of the car was a dirtbag, I doubt he expected any reason for gun play or he would have not pulled the vehicle over solo. I SUSPECT.

It is getting more and more common for officers to be physically attacked here, but not so much getting shot. The last two deaths have been from shootings so you could say it is on the increase.

Yea, I figured it wouldn't be nearly as high as here, given the population difference, but it's still horrible nonetheless that more attacks against LEOs and deaths are happening. I do wonder if it's a sort of chicken vs. egg thing that's causing this increase to happen.
