    Hardwood Batons

I happen to be a big fan of the hardwood batons. I was talking to another deputy who said they break often. Is this true? Do they really have a habit of breaking? Can you even buy them any more? I wouldn't mind having one for when i get hired on(the dept. i am currently with allows them).

    Thanks :D

"often" is a relative term. How often is "often"? Also, how are they breaking and during what kind of activity are they breaking?

I've had a kamagong stick crack on me during after repeated heavy impact sumbrada drills but I think there was a fault in the wood itself that fractured under stress.

    Dymondwood looks promising...

Now back in the good old days when I carried a baton (yes I could spin and twirl it with the best of the beat cops) mine was made of "mabumba." (no joke). "Mabumba" is an African walnut and extremely tough; it never failed me. Cold weather or hot I could always count on it to "give a licking and keep on ticking." :D

NYPD switched over to polycarbonate a while back, except for officers who were already on the job at that time. The wood ones available through NYPD are just a bit sturdier than balsa wood, and would probably stand somewhere between one and three solid impacts against a hard surface before turning to kindling and firewood, but in fairness they are under $5, and you don't generally use them against a very hard surface anyway.

I have seen good solid ones made out of cocobolo hardwood, maple and hickory, and other hardwoods, which are more costly but would stand up far better to use. Most types still readily available, but for mail order you will usually need to provide proof of agency employment (depends on state of course.)

Where could I buy one if I wanted to? Those names of the wood are quite humorous. :D

    batons, any police supply store.

historical and used, ebay. I'm still trying to find a presentation one like the ones they used to award in the early 1900's. Even a replica.
